5D: The excretory system Flashcards
- Explain the basic structure of the nephron using the following: glomerulus, loop of Henle, Bowman's capsule, collecting duct -What is the function of the kidney? What do the kidneys produce?
What is a nephron
Is the functional unit of the kidney that filters blood
Structure of the nephron
Nephron diamgram.docx
Glomerulus
Network of capillaries that is encapsulated by the Bowman’s Capsule. –> collects filtered blood
Bowman’s Capsule
First section of the nephron which collects filtered blood from capillaries of the glomerulus.
Loop of Henle
U-shaped section of the nephron that descends into the medulla and regulates salt + water balance.
Collecting duct
Final section of the nephron. Fine-tunes filtrate composition. Delivers urine to the bladder.
What is the function of the Kidney
To filter blood
Kidneys do what and produce what
Kidneys regulates water levels (including salts, glucose, ETC), produce urine and filtering blood
How do kidneys regulate water levels
via active and passive transport
TRUE OR FALSE: Approximately one million nephrons in each kidney
TRUE
What is the Cortex
Is the outer/covering layer of the kidney
What is the Medulla
Is the inner part/layer of the kidney (helps regulate the concentration of urine by filtering out water, salts and acid)
TRUE OR FALSE: Carbs and Fats are harder to breakdown than proteins
FALSE
The Urethra is
the tube that urine comes out of
