5c (Genetic Modification) Flashcards
1
Q
Restriction Enzyme
A
An enzyme that cuts DNA at specific site to obtain desired gene and leaves sticky ends
2
Q
Ligase enzyme
A
An enzyme that forms bonds between Vector and Gene to join them together
3
Q
Recombinant DNA
A
DNA from 1 specie that also has DNA from another in the Human insulin story the new plasmid is recombinant
4
Q
Transgenic Organism
A
An organism which also has DNA from another species in Human insulin story the bacteria with the recombinant plasmid is a transgenic organism
5
Q
Vector
A
Moves DNA from one place to another. Plasmids or viruses can be used as vectors
6
Q
Human insuline
A
- Section of human DNA for growth hormone that makes insuline is cut out using restriction enzymes
- Plasmid that acts as vectors is taken out of bacteria and is cutted using same restriction enzymes
- Human gene for insuline was stuck into the plasmid using ligase enzymes
- Plasmid with the human insuline gene is put into a bacteria
- Fermenter is used to reproduce bacteria to produce much more human insuline
