5b (Selective breeding) Flashcards
What is selective breeding?
Selective breeding is when man choose 2 parents with the desired characteristics.
He reproduces them and the gene for desired characteristic is passed onto offspring.
When he gets offspring he again chooses the 2 with the desired characteristics to be the new parents.
Over many years the selectively bred individuals will have better quality for that desired characteristic than the original type
How man organises sex between plants
Male stamen (anther + filamnet) cut off before pollen mature.
Man stops other pollen from pollinating stigma by putting a cotton (muslin) bag over the carpel.
He brushes the pollen on from his chosen male plant.
Plant/Crop selective breeding objectives
- Provide higher yields
- Develop resistance to diseases and pest damage
- Hardier
- Better balance of nutrients
Animal selective breeding objectives
- Produce more meat, milk, eggs…
- Produce more fur
- More offspring
- Increased resistance to pathogens
