2f Flashcards
How the process of respiration produces ATP in living organisms
ATP is a product of respiration
ATP is composed of an organic molecule called adenosine attached to three phosphate groups. ATP can be broken down losing one phosphate group and forming ADP
ATP
Provides energy for cells
Aerobic and anaerobic differences
Aerobic respiration requires oxygen which means it is more efficient, breaks down glucose completely, the products are CO2 and H2O and a lot of energy is released.
Anaerobic respiration requires no oxygen, breaks down glucose incompletely, products are lactic acid and ATP and little energy is released.
Aerobic is more efficient than anaerobic
Aerobic equation
Glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water (+energy(ATP))
C6H12O6 + 6O2 –> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Anaerobic equation
Animals = glucose –> lactic acid + ATP
Yeast = glucose = Carbon dioxide + ethanol + ATP
