5a- place is produced in a variety of ways at different scales Flashcards
what is placemaking
giving a space an identity, gentrification, rebranding, planning
why is place making done
make places seem nice to attract FDI, by making a place for desirable more likely to be invested in. Creates a PFL between investment and placemaking
places that have suffered due to a recession or negative structural change may need regeneration to attract new businesses and make it more desirable
how do architects and planners create meaningful and authentic places
architecture can make an important contribution to placemaking through the design of individual buildings, architects design public spaces and the buildings can reflect the history of a place making it more individual.
in the UK local authorities have their own planning departments who have to approve architects plans and have overall power over placemaking - can transform a place completely
what was the Hulme crescent and why was it unsuccessful
project by architects to make a council estate in the shape of a crescent to reflect buildings in bath. But it was poorly made and lacked community, mental health problems were X10 - people didn’t want to live there
what are mixed communties
due to the PFL created by inequality mixed communities try and prevent this. A range of cheap and expensive housing is built in one place so people of all levels of wealth and inequality can live in the same place and have access to the same services
what is the positive feedback loop linked with inequality
inequality- decrease in wealth and opportunities - rich leave the area to places with less inequality- land becomes cheaper- attracts poor people- less investment- inequality
what is a 24 hour city
businesses allowed to stay open through the night changes the perception of cities at night. Due to an increase in people working shifts at night 24 hour cities attract people, 1/2 of night bus passengers are people commuting to and from work. Also attracts people from countries with traditions of late nights like Spain
how do local community groups shape the place the live
placemaking uses communities assets, inspiration and expertise by creating public spaces that people want
residents associations are concerned with neighbour matters like safety, speeding and can implement small scale changes
Parish councils can advise the local authority and use opinion of people to help policies get passed and change the place to suit the needs of the local people
Heritage associations play a advisory role to preserve historic features of future generations.
how effective is bottom up place making
small scale
dont have loads of power but can inform people that do
cant stop large scale redevelopment of a place
