What is vinegar?
An aqueous solution of ethnic acid
What is the process which makes vinegar?
Microbial Oxidation
What is the acid + metal carbonate reaction?
Acid + Metal Carbonate —–> Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
What is the carboxylic acid + alcohol reaction?
Carboxylic Acid + Alcohol —–> Ester + Water
How do you make an ester?
1) Mix carboxylic acid and alcohol together
2) Add a few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid
3) Warm it
4) Tip into sodium carbonate solution (neutralises the catalyst (reaction stopped when fixing stops))
How do you identify an ester?
Fruity smell
What are esters used for?
- Solvent in perfume
- Flavouring in sweets
