3.3 Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is the loss of electrons called?
Oxidation
What charge does an ion have if it loses 2 electrons?
2+
What is the gain fo electrons called?
Reduction
What charged does an ion have if it gains 1 electron?
1-
What happens to the charges in any ionic compound?
Balence, positive = negative
How are the ions arranged in an ionic compound?
Giant Ionic Lattice
Define ionic bonding?
The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
What type of attraction is ionic bonding?
Very strong attraction
Why do ionic compounds have a high melting point?
- Ionic bonds are very strong
- In a giant ionic lattice, there are lots of ionic bonds
- Breaking all the ionic bonds requires a large amount of energy
What does electrical conductivity require?
Particles to move freely
What is the only state ionic compounds can conduct electricity?
Liquid (l), or dissolved (aq) as ions can move freely
