5.3.2 - carboxylic acids Flashcards
what type of molecules are carboxylic acids
organic molecules
what functional group do carboxylic acids contain
-COOH
how do you know if something is a carboxylic acid from the name
the name will end in -oic acid
eg. methanOIC ACID, propanOIC ACID
what is vinegar to ethanoic acid
vinegar is an aqueous solution of ethanoic acid
when does vinegar form
it forms when the ethanol in wine undergoes microbial oxidation
what does vinegar taste like and why
it has a very sour, acrid taste
because of the acidity of ethanoic acid
what is an acid
a H+ donor
what do acids do to form a salt
donate an H+ ions to form a salt
carboxylic acids forming salt:
the carboxylic acid group (-COOH) loses its H+ and becomes negatively charged
the name changes from ‘-oic acid’ in the carboxylic to ‘-oate’ in the salt
ethanOIC ACID -> ethanOATE + H+
what can you observe when acids react with metals
- effervescence (due to the hydrogen gas being produced)
- solid disappears (due to metal being used up in the reaction)
general equation for the reaction between a metal and an acid
metal + acid -> salt + hydrogen
what can you observe when acids react with metal carbonates
- effervescence (due to the carbon dioxide gas being produced)
- solid disappears (due to the metal carbonate being used up in the reaction)
what is the general equation for an acid reacting with a metal carbonate
acid + metal carbonate -> salt + water + carbon dioxide
