3.2.1 - particle numbers Flashcards
what is the relative mass of a proton
1
what is the relative mass of a neutron
1
what is the relative mass of an electron
0.0005
what is the relative charge of a proton
+1
what is the relative charge of a neutron
0
what is the relative charge of an electron
-1
where are protons and neutrons found within the atom?
the nucleus
where are electrons found within the atom?
the shells
what does the mass number show?
the total number of protons and neutrons
what does the atomic number show?
the number of protons/electrons
since atoms are neutral…
number of protons = number of electrons
what are isotopes?
atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
what is relative atomic mass (RAM)
the average mass of an atom of an element
what 2 things are used to calculate RAM?
- mass numbers of each isotope
- their %-abundances in nature
e.g calculate the RAM of chlorine
chlorine-35 | mass number - 35 | %abundance - 75
chlorine-37 | mass number - 37 | %abundance - 25
RAM = (75/100 x 35) + (25/100 x 37)
