5.2 excretion Flashcards
Excretion
Removal of metabolic waste from the body
What is metabolic waste?
A substance that is produced in excess by the metabolic processes in the cells
What are the excretory organs?
lungs – carbon dioxide.
Liver – urea.
Kidneys.
Skin – sweat
Why is it important?
Metabolic products can be toxic, so it can interfere with cell processes
What are liver cells called?
Hepato-sites
Hepatic artery
oxygenated blood from the heart travels from the aorta via the hepatic artery into the liver
Hepatic portal vein
Deoxygenated blood from the digestive system enters the liver from the hepatic portal vein
Hepatic vein
Blood leaves the liver fired, I hepatic vein
Bile duct
Carries bile from the liver to the gallbladder, where is stored until needed to aid the digestion of fats in the small intestine
function of liver
Excess amino acids are broken down
kupfer cells
break down worn out rbc wbc bacteria which come from hepatic portal vein
breakdown hb to make billirubin which is excreted in bile and faeces (brown pigment)
