5.2 Flashcards
Radian
The angle subtended at the center of a circle when the arc length is equal to the radius of the circle
Period
Time taken in seconds for one complete circular path
Angular velocity
The rate of angular motion, 2pi/ T, measured in radians per second
Centripetal acceleration
The acceleration of an object moving with uniform circular motion, it is directed radially inwards towards the center of the circle, perpendicular to the velocity vector at any instant
Centripetal force
Resultant force on an object, acting towards the center of the circle, causing it to move in a circular path
(Not an actual force, a label for circular inward forces)
Circular motion using a whirling bung
Bung on string through tube attached to weights, mark on string, spin bung so radius is length to mark on string, count 10 revolutions, find speed
Repeat adjusting weights, keeping radius constant
Plot F against v^2
Reaction force in circular motion
At top, reaction smallest
At bottom, reaction largest
Reaction force always centripetal
