514-Perio Flashcards
What is the process on the maxilla and mandible that contains the alveoli for the root(s) of each tooth?
The Alveolar Process
What is the process on the mandible that creates the TMJ? This is FOUNDATIONAL anatomy!
CONDYLAR Process
What is the process on the mandible where the temporalis muscle attaches? (MUY IMPORTANTE!)
Coronoid Process
What is the bone in between alveoli?
InterDENTAL Septum
What is the bone in-between the ROOTS of a posterior?
InterRADICular Septum
What is the process that forms the “cheek bone”
Zygomatic Process
What is the process that joins the hard palate?
The Palatine Process
What is the name for the compact bone that surrounds the entire root of the tooth?
The Alveolar Bone
Which cortical plate on the mandible cross section is concave? Which plate is convex?
Concave: Labial Cortical Plate; Convex: Lingual Cortical Plate
What is the region where the cortical plate meets the alveolar bone?
The Alveolar Crest
What is the “though layer” of alveolar bone surrounding the root?
Lamina Dura
About how thick is the PDL attaching alveolar bone to cementum?
0.1mm
What two cell types make PDL?
Fibroblasts & Cementoblasts
What type of connective tissue proper is the PDL?
Dense Irregular
Are there blood vessels in the PDL?
Yes! Lose them, lose the tooth.
What type of collagen fiber are Sharpy’s fibers? How can you tell in a picture?
Sharpy’s fibers are type I collagen and they have a really distinct “banding” pattern to them.
What are areas on the alveolar bone that have bundles of connections to sharpy’s fibers?
Bundle Bone(so same area as Alveolar Bone & Lamina Dura)
Which nerve innervates the PDL of both the Maxilla and Mandible?
V. Trigeminal
What are the 4 types of nerve endings found in the PDL?
1.Free Nerve Endings 2.Ruffini’s Endings 3.Coiled Endings 4.Encapsulated-Spindle Type
What are the “stair-like” like interconnections of blood vessels that supply the PDL? What is another example in the body?
ANA-STO-MO-SES. Coronary Arteries, and “Roundabout” example in Brain
What were the three break down regions for blood supply in the alveolar area? (remember the slide?)
1.PDL Supply 2.Alveolar Bone Supply 3.Supraperiostial supply
What are the fibers found in the PDL that are very distinct from the type I collagen fibers? Which direction do they run? What type of fibers might they be? Main function?!
OXYTALAN fibers. They run vertically from Apex of Root to Cervical Region of Root. Immature ELASTIC fibers. FXN: Translate FORCE!
What happens to the colorization of PDL when pressure is applied?
Hyalinization (Like fingernail, pushing blood supply away)
What are the 5 Priniciple Fiber Groups of the PDL!?
1.Alveolar Crest Group 2. Horizontal Group 3. Oblique Group 4. Apical Group 5. Interradicular Group
