- Spontaneous Pain
- Inability to Void
- Palpable Bladder
- Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
What investigations are necessary in Acute Urinary Retention?
- General Examination - including Digital rectal Exam

What is the purpose of the General Examination - including Digital rectal Exam?
To find the Aetiology
What is the purpose of Catheterisation?
If this relieves the pain and allows urine flow it is indicative
What are the treatment options for Acute Urinary Retention?
- Catheterisation
- Treat the underlying cause (if present)
- Alpha Blockers
- Trans-Urethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)
How do Alpha Blockers work?
These cause Smooth Muscle Relaxation of the Prostate, and antagonize the “Dynamic” Element to the Obstruction
