5.1 Study Guide Flashcards
What are enzymes?
Catalysts
What are catalysts?
they speed up chemical reactions by lowering the amount of activation energy.
What is a substrate?
reactant that binds to enzyme
What is a active site?
where substrate fits into enzyme
What are the properties of enzymes?
They are reaction specific, are not consumed in reaction, made of protein, and affected by cellular conditions
How would denaturing of the active site affect the function of an enzyme?
Active site will change shape and the enzyme then would not be able to bind.
How are enzymes named?
Named for the reactions they catalyze. Most enzymes end in —ase
What is an induced fit model?
3-D structure of enzyme that fits substrate. Substrate binding causes enzyme to change shape. Positions substrate so that less activation energy is required.
The higher the enzyme concentration…
The more collisions will occur.
The higher the substrate concentration…
The more collisions will occur.
What is the correlation between temperatures and enzymes?
Enzymes will denature if they get too hot. Ideal temperature for human body enzyme is 37 degrees Celsius.
