2.3 Study Guide Flashcards
What does bonding provide?
Stability
Atoms are more stable when?
When they have a full octet (usually 8)
What is electronegativity?
measure of how strongly atoms attract
Are metals more likely to loose or gain electrons?
Lose
What are the three types of bonds?
Non-polar covalent, polar covalent, and ionic
What is a non-polar bond?
Bonds that have equal electronegativity and equal pull on electron pair. They are overall neutral.
What is a polar bond?
Bonding is shared unequally with both a positive and negative end.
What is ionic bonding?
Electrons have a extreme difference in electronegativity and are on opposite sides of the periodic table. Causes a transfer in electrons.
Which bond separates in water?
Ionic
