Which CNS component controls the first 4 phases of the sexual response
desire- hypothalmus; excitement- PNS; arousal/plateau- limbic system; orgasm- SNS
What are the 5 phases of the sexual response?
Desire, excitement, arousal/plateau, orgasm, resolution
Define FSD
sexual complaint or problem from disorders of desire, arousal, orgasm or sexual pain that causes personal distress or interpersonal distress
What are the major substances involved in the arousal phase?
Androgens, dopamine, oxytocin
What are the major substances in the orgasm phase?
opioids, serotonin, prolactin, oxytocin (decreased dopamine)
What are the main psychological causes of FSD?
abuse, depression, relationship, stress, self esteem
What is the MC FSD? how is it dx?
Female sexual interest/arousal dysfunction. Dx by absent/reduced: interest, erotic thoughts, initiation, excitement, arousal, sensation. All w/n 6mo and without other mental explaination
Define sexual arousal disorder
inability to attain or maintain until completion an adequate lubrication-swelling response
What are the 3 major types of FSDs?
Female sexual interest/arousal dysfunction, Female orgasmic dysfunction, Genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder
What are some associations of secondary FOD? How is it Tx?
hypoactive sexual desire, pelvic surgery, SSRIs, psychosocial factors. Tx: psychotherapy, couples counseling, masturbation
Define dyspareunia
pain assoc with sex but not caused by lack of lubrication or by vaginismus
Define vaginismus
involuntary spasm of the musc of out third of vagina which interferes with sex
