Why do people have stereotypes?
It is part of organisation in schemata. It is energy saving, allows anticipation, avoids information over-flow and is right most of the time.
What is the problem with stereotypes?
It overlooks the individual.
What is prejudice?
The evaluative pre-judgement often based on negative stereotypes.
What is discrimination?
Behaving differently with people from different groups because of their membership.
What are people most likely to rely on stereotypes?
When under time pressure, fatigued, suffering from information overload, or in unfamiliar circumstance.
How can prejudice and discrimination be avoided?
By getting to know members of other groups and reflective practice.
