What is Physical Activity? What is Physical Activity?
Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by
skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure
How much physical activity do young people need to be healthy?
All children and youths under the age of 18 need to
accumulate a minimum of 60 minutes of MVPA every day.
What is MVPA
MVPA= Moderate to vigorous physical activity
How does someone know if they’ve hit their MVPA
- Their heart is pumping faster than normal (more than 50% of their max HR)
- breathing rate is noticeably increased
- started to sweat
How much physical activity do Adults need to be healthy?
All adults over 18 should accumulate a minimum of 30 min
minutes of MVPA 5 days a week.

What is the definition of play?
Active play is where children (and adults) move and have fun
It is undertaken freely and usually spontaneous
There are a huge range of benefits for children- social interaction & creativity
What is the definition of leisure and recreation?
Any activity carried out in a person’s own free time that they enjoy and they
choose to do because they find it has a positive impact on their life (de-stress)
What is the definition of physical education
Instilling the knowledge, skills & values of physical activity in an educational
setting which develops abilities, confidence and motivation of students
What is the definition of mass participation sports?
Occasions when people come together to train and participate in an event such
as a marathon, triathalon or obstacle course races such as hellandback.
Participants can challenge themselves while enjoying training with others.
What is the definition of outdoor and adventure activities?
Activities that take place in our natural environment such as woods, lakes or the
sea and some of these may be high risk such as rock climbing or mountain
biking.
What is the definition of a sport?
Sport is the most formalised concept as it has rules. It is competitive and
requires a high level of skill.

Quantitative data can be counted, measured, and expressed using numbers.
Qualitative data is descriptive and conceptual.
