baddeley showed that we mix up words that sound similar when using our stm, but mix up words which have similar meanings when using our ltm. this shows that our coding in stm is definitely acoustic and ltm is semantic. this supports that the ltm store and the stm store are separate and independent

how do shallice and warrington and the case of kf contradict the msm? (weakness)

the msm states that stm is a unitary store (only one type of stm). however, shallice and warrington found that if digits were read aloud to kf (who suffered with amnesia) he struggled to remember them, but if he read them himself he could remember them much more effectively. this shows that there may be a different stm store for sounds

how does craik and watkins’ elaborative rehearsal theory contradict the msm and maintenance rehearsal? (weakness)

according to msm the amount of rehearsal you do is what counts. craik and watkins said this was wrong. they said it is the type of rehearsal that matters, and that maintenance rehearsal would only maintain the knowledge in the stm store. they argued that elaborative rehearsal is needed to transfer memories into the ltm store. to do this you must link the information to your existing knowledge/ consider the meanings behind the information you are trying to remember
