10 - interference ao3 Flashcards
how is evidence from lab studies a strength of interference as an explanation of forgetting?
interference in memory is consistently demonstrated. as the majority of the studies have taken place in labs this means that the results are most likely valid as controls have been put in place to ensure there are no confounding variables.
how is artificial materials a weakness of interference?
the stimulus used in lab studies tends to be artificial lists of words. the use of artificial tasks makes interference much more likely to happen, it might not be as common in everyday life compared to in a lab
how is baddeley and hitch’s study on rugby players research support for interference? (strength)
baddeley and hitch wanted to find out if interference was a more likely explanation for forgetting than length of time. they asked rugby players to recall the names of the teams they had played this season. the results showed that accurate recall did not depend on how long ago the matches took place, but instead the amount of games each player had taken part in. more games = harder to remember. shows how interference can happen in everyday life
