5. Enzymes Flashcards
catalyst
a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction and is not changed by the reaction
enzymes
proteins that are involved in all metabolic reactions, where they function as biological catalysts
why are enzymes important in all living organisms
maintain reaction speeds of all metabolic reactions at a rate that can sustain life.
Without enzymes, reactions would take place very slowly or not at all.
Enzyme action
the shape of the active site of an enzyme is complementary to its substrate so that substrate fits into active site and enzyme-substrate complex is formed and products are formed.
they are specific
effect of changes in temperature on enzyme
optimum temperature
kinetic energy increases
frequency of effective collisions increases
denaturation- shape of active site changes so substrate can no longer fit and bind and enzyme-substrate complex won’t be formed
effect of changes in pH on enzyme
denaturation- shape of active site changes so substrate can no longer fit and bind and enzyme-substrate complex won’t be formed
