5-C Divisions of the Peritoneal Cavity Flashcards
Define the greater sac of the peritoneal cavity and its divisions.
most of the peritoneal cavity, excluding the lesser sac, is divided into the supra colic compartment and infra colic compartment
What does the supra colic compartment contain
the stomach, liver and spleen
What does the infra colic compartment contain?
the small intestine and the ascending and descending colons
What are the paracolic gutters
depressions along the lateral borders of the ascending and descending colon that allow communication between the compartments
What divides the supra and infra colic compartments
the transverse colon
Where is the lesser sac?
small compartment located posterior to the stomach
How are the greater and lesser peritoneal sacs joined?
communicate via the epiploic or mental foramen
Describe the spread of infection from the pelvis superiorly
depends on the position of the patient but infection can spread superiorly to the infra colic and supracolic compartments into the right and left subphrenic compartments
Infections occur most frequently on the right side of the body due to what (2)
appendicitis and duodenal ulcers
Infections in the ________ spaces spread easily to the pelvis in the erect position.
subphrenic spaces
