5 Aerodynamics of Flight Flashcards
What is the lift equation?
L = (CL * P * V2 * S) / 2
Lift = coefficient of lift times air density times velocity squared times surface of wing, all divided by 2
What are the 3 types of parasite drag?
Form, interference, skin
What is form drag?
Drag due to shape(antennas, engine cowlings, etc)
What is interference drag?
Intersections of air streams creates eddy currents, turbulence (wing & fuselage)
What is skin drag?
Air moving over the wing and drag being produced by the not smoothness of the plane
What is induced drag?
Created when generating lift. The vortices create downwash, creating drag. Uses energy, makes lift vector move back because relative wind is more down
What creates more induced drag?
Lower airspeed, higher aoa (because there is a greater pressure difference
How do vortices move?
Up and in towards the plane.
What is ground affect?
When the plane doesn’t want to go down because of the air/vortices below the wing and ground.
What is a moment?
Mathematical measure of an aircraft’s tendency to rotate about it’s CG
What is stability?
Quality of the aircraft to correct for conditions that may disturb its equilibrium & return to its og flight path.
What is static stability?
initial tendency, or direction of movement, back to equilibrium.
