5-1 5-2 NERVOUS ANATOMY + BRAIN STRUCTURE Flashcards
what does the CNS include
brain and spinal cord
what does the PNS include
ganglion and nerves
what are the two systems in the PNS
afferent and efferent
what is the afferent system
neutrons that carry electrical impulses towards the CNS from receptors
what is the efferent system
neurons that carry charges away from the CNS to muscles and glands
what are the two types of efferent system
somatic and autonomic
what is the somatic system
efferent neurons under voluntary control
what is the autonomic system
efferent neurons under voluntary control
what are the two types of autonomic systems
sympathetic and parasympathetic
what are neurons
active cell type
what are cell bodies
contains most cellular organelles
what are dendrites and their functions
extensions of cell membrane that send impulses towards the cell
what are axons and their function
single, long process.
what are sensory / afferent neurons and the function
messages are sent to the CNS; mostlyhave a single process attached to cell body.
what are motor / efferent neurons?
messages are sent away from CNS. many processes attached to cell body
what is neuroglia and its function
supports and insulates cells between neurons, promotes health and growth of the nruones
what are astrocytes (CNS)
support neurons, secrete CSF
what are microglial cells (CNS)
clean up in CNS
What are oligodendrocytes (CNS) and Schwann cells (PNS) ?
these cells extend cell membrane, wrap around and insulate neutron. produces myelin sheaths
what is the myelin sheath
white, phospholipid coating, increases speed of impulse conduction
how are neurons organized in the PNS
cell bodies = ganglia, axons = nerves
how are neurones organized in the CNS
cell bodies = nuclei / grey matter, axons = tracts / white matter (bc of myelin sheaths)
what are the meninges
connective tissue membrane that surround the CNS
what are the functions of the meninges
- cover and protect the CNS
- protect blood vessels
- contain CSF
-form partitions
