4B - Diversity and Selection Flashcards
1
Q
What is a diploid number of chromosomes
A
Each cell contains 2 of each chromosome, one from each parent.
2
Q
What is a haploid number of chromosomes
A
Each cell contains only 1 of each chromosome
3
Q
What are pair of matching chromosomes called
A
homologous chromosomes
4
Q
What number of chromosomes do gametes have
A
haploid
5
Q
Stages of meiosis
A
- DNA unravels and replicated to form chromatids
- DNA condenses and forms double armed chromosomes made from SISTER CHROMATIDS joined by a CENTROMERE.
- First division - Chromosomes arrange into homologous pairs which are separated
- Second division - Centromere is divided which splits the sister chromatids
- Four haploid cells are produced
