4A.5 There are significant variations in the lived experience of place and engagement with them. Flashcards
Variations in political engagement can be explained by civic engagement. -
The way in which people engage and participate in their community in order to improve the quality of life for others and shape their future can be voting or volunteering.
Why these engagements to places may vary - (low levels)
People of the low class (categorised as the DE category) as they feel they have low levels of commitment as the government policies have little relevance to them to support this idea only 39% of people in the DE category vote.
Why these engagements to places may vary - (high levels of engagement may be considered with elderly people -
More politically aware and feel their voices will be more likely to be heard. over 65% of people 65 are civically engaged.
Factors affecting lived experience and therefore their levels of engagement - 2 factors which vary
May be due to their membership - a feeling of belonging and the idea of being accepted.
May be due to influence a sense of playing a part in a place this can vary due to age and length of residence as examples
Attachment to place varies on factors such as?
Age, length of residence, ethnicity and deprivation.
Reasons why age can affect engagement?
Can be combined with length of residence time but it is seen that younger people are less widely accepted
Conflicts can occur between different groups in communities as they perceive different things -
Conflicts about regeneration in communities often arise due to disparities in how different groups perceive the benefits and consequences of redevelopment projects. These projects can lead to gentrification, where long-term residents are displaced due to rising costs and changing neighbourhood dynamics. For example the 2011 Race riots where it highlighted the differences of marginalisation and the conflict of some groups along with urban deprivation and poor relationship between police and black community all lead to such areas
Conflicts can occur among contrasting groups in communities -
Lack of political engagement and inequality in socio-economic impacts.
