Successful regions - M4 Corridor (Berkshire)
Since 2001 the population of Berkshire has increased 6.4% with a majority of the existing and new population being involved in knowledge based jobs 50% in 2008. Furthermore, from 2005 to 2015 property prices increased from 40-50%.
Detroit as an unsuccessful place -
Results in increased levels of social deprivation including 18% have a college degree. Crime with 7/10 crimes going unsolved and it takes on average just less than an hour for Police to respond to these calls. Received effects of deindustrialisation of decreased primary industries from 80,000 buildings being abandoned.
Gated communities - Hidden Hills
Urban and rural settlements, as either individual buildings or groups of housing, landscapes of surveillance and CCTV aim to reduce crime and increase security, E.G hidden hills LA California, evidence of these effects have proven successful due to no rapes, murders or arson attacks since 2001. Seen as important to manage from it covering a 1.7 mile radius. And in that space it has a population of 1856 with the average house price being $1,000,000.
Commuter village - Yate Bristol
Settlements with a proportion of the population living in them but commute out daily to work, they invest in public transport and services and building new houses. There are priorities for increased transport effectiveness for example it takes on average 49 minutes to get from Yate to Bristol city centre and 22 minutes by train. Therefore it s priority is improved transport links.
Sink Estates - Hulme Manchester
Housing estates characterised by economic and social deprivation of crime, domestic violence of drugs and gangs. Example of economic deprivation is 60% of people are dependant on economic support and lack of degrees and education due to 74% of the population leaving school at age 17.
