How can governments try to instigate regeneration
-Governments try to transform struggling areas by assessing problems and allocating money to action plans
What are gated communities
Gated communities are residential areas with controlled entrances and a closed perimeter. They are often used to separate gentrified newcomers
What are sink estates
Sink estates are British council estates characterised by high levels of social and economic deprivation
What are commuter villages
Commuter villages are places where residents work elsewhere during the day, creating ghost towns for the neighbourhood
What is rural settlement decline
Rural settlement decline is where people migrate out for education and employment opportunities creating demographic changes in these rural communities
What are the major concerns for governments in West Berkshire
- Skill shortages (lack of labour)
- Lack of higher education provision
- Small pockets of deprivation ( aldermaston)
- Over reliance on big TNCs e.g ICT companies like Microsoft in Reading
- Lack of affordable housing in commuter villages e.g cookham and Windsor

- Sink estates including East Middlesbrough and Grove Hill in comparison with Gated communities and owner occupied estates like coulby Newham
- Gap in educational attainment ~ half of students require improvement
What are the main priorities for West Berkshire
- Deliver 150-300 new homes, mainly on brownfield sites
- Encourage a mix of housing, tenure and types
- Invest in sustainable public transport
- Deliver a super fast broadband plan
- The East Kennet Valley plan- protect employment areas for aldermaston, build new homes and improve rail connections

- Protect sports facilities e.g Middlesbrough college
- Build new high quality housing - 11,300 new homes in grove hill
- Regenerate greater middlehaven -invest £215 million to create 1500 new jobs and 100 new homes
