4a- Increasing global mobility impacts the diffusion and ability to respond disease Flashcards
how has global mobility sped up diffusion of diseases
migration- moves disease from place to place, same with tourism e.g covid
space-time compression - diseases spread more easily and further away in less time due to an increase in access to transport
movement of aid workers- cholera in Haiti
disease that historically would have remained in one place now are diffused globally
how has global mobility helped to respond to diseases
spread of ideas- vaccines, and strategies to combat diseases can be spread easier e.g covid
International aid workers - support communities
LIDCs will benefit from trade workers, flows of people and ideas
role of the WHO in providing international strategies to combat disease and what they have done
gathers health data and researches health problems- e.g research groups for influenza, and making vaccines
monitors international health problems, supports UN states devise health strategies,
provides technical support during health crisis
raised awareness of the Zika virus in 2016
develops global strategies to combat diseases like HIV, malaria and TB
promotes research into new drugs and insecticides
predicts spread of disease
how has the WHO supported governments
after EQ in 2015 in Nepal WHO delivered emergency health services- mobile medicine units and supported foreign medical teams
in 2014 Ebola outbreak in Liberia caused the collapse of health services so couldn’t cope with an outbreak of measles WHO and UNICEF organised a countrywide measles vaccination to control the spread of the disease
how did WHO intervene with Malaria
vaccine especially for children, provided tests to confirm cases, vector control- insecticide treated nets and sprays
evidence of success of WHO with malaria
625,000 to 619,000 deaths from 2020-21
in 2021, 35 countries reported fewer than 1000 cases of the disease- was only 13 in 2000
how did COVID-19 spread
thought to have spread from the Wuhan market from live animals like bats, in Jan 2020 Wu Han locked down. China’s high-speed rail and airline networks led to spread across China and because of the Chinese new year, many people were returning to their families. WHO declared it an emergency on 30 Jan 2020 and a pandemic on 11 March 2020 which shows it spread alarmingly quickly and more to places there are well connected. The Worldwide Air transportation Network on avg transports 12.3 million people a day so there were lots of opportunities for Covid to spread and go all over the world
what did the British red cross do in Haiti at a local level
delivered clean water to 300,000 and treated 18,700 cases of cholera in treatment units for people living in camps in Port-au-Prince
provided medical supplies to the main hospital in Saint-Marc
631,000 people benefited from access to improved water and sanitation
what did the British red cross do in Haiti at a national level
massive hygiene programme built 1300 latrines serving 250,000 people
raised awareness on how to avoid infections and spot characteristics of cholera
4.4 million people benefited from hygiene promotion activities and 3.6 million benefited from cholera prevention and outbreak response services
