4.5.1.2 Contact and Non-contact Forces Flashcards
Force:
A force is a push or pull that acts on an object due to their interaction with another object.
What are all forces between objects?
- contact forces
- non-contact force
Contact force:
the objects are physically touching
Non-contact force:
the objects are physically separated
Examples of contact forces:
- friction
- air resistance/drag
- tension
- normal contact force
- upthrust
- thrust
- push
- pull
- lift
Examples of non-contact forces:
- weight
- magnetic force
- electrostatic force
- gravitational force
Upthrust:
the upward force that is exerted on an object that is in or on a fluid
Friction:
the force that opposes the movement of an object sliding over a surface
Tension:
force transmitted through a cable or a string when pulled on by forces acting on its opposite ends
Lift:
the force on the wings of an aircraft that keeps it flying
Normal contact force:
the force that a solid surface exerts against an object on a right angle
Drag/air or water resistance:
the force that acts against an object moving through a fluid
Thrust:
the force causing an object to move e.g. propulsive force of an engine
Electrostatic force:
the force between charged particles e.g. attraction and repulsion, like charges repel and opposite charges attract
Magnetic force:
the force experienced by an object in certain magnetic fields
