Ataxia
Common cerebellar disorder - delayed initiation, jerky and poorly controlled movements
Wide based gait with decreased arm swing
Dysmetria
Under or overshooting when reaching for a target (inability to estimate ROM required)
Nystagmus
Involuntary movement of eyeballs in a vertical, horizontal or rotating direction…can interfere with small adjustments required for balance
Dysarthria
Explosive or slurred speech
Hyperalgesia
Increased pain sensation
Prior to somatosensory testing, it is crucial for the OT to assess the following areas:
Hearing Language skills Mental function Verbal skills Vision
ROM contraindications
Dislocated joint
Unhealed fracture
Soft tissue surgery recently performed
Myositis/ectopic ossification
OT typically cannot fix ROM for (3)
Ankylosis or arthrodesis
Long standing contracturas with fibrotic changes
Severe joint destruction
