4.5 Flashcards
Why is the sea level rising?
The glaciers melt
The water when heated expands
Ice on land melts
How bad will sea level get and how will it affect different places around the world
If sea levels rise by 1.5 m in Bangladesh 17 million people would die and 16 per cent of the country will flood
How will climate change affect erosion/deposition
Climate change will affect erosion as cliffs would erode faster because the storms and waves will have much more energy
How will climate change affect storm frequency, intensity, and storm surges?
Storms will become more frequent and more powerful as they will have lots more energy and will have higher surges.
How will storms and storm surges affect people and the environment?
Storm surges will effect the uk greatly as the water will ve forced into the estuaries and will flood damaging crops and destroy many cities
Explain how groynes and sea walls work
Groynes word by stopping LSD from depositing sand along the beach. Sea walls reflect the wave energy back out to sea
Explain how beach replenishment and slope stabalisation work
Beach replenishment is when you put sand on the beach and spread it out this is a soft engineering process and requires maintenance once a year
Slope stabilisation is a soft engineering process where you put pipes under slopes so the water can drain out of it into the sea.
What are the advantages and disadvantages for each management type?
Soft engineering is very good because they are normally cheaper than hard engineering, they work with natural processes. Hard engineering works against natural processes and is generally more expensive than soft engineering.
What is the difference between hard and soft engineering? Which is best?
Hard engineering is working against natural processes and soft is working with natural processes. In my opinion hard engineering processes are more effective but they cost more.
What is strategic realignment and which areas might be left to erode?
Strategic realignment is when you look at a coastline as a whole and pick high income areas to protect and low income areas you will let erode.
Explain why ITCM schemes are a sustainable form of coastal management
Itcm is sustainable because it protects high earning areas and lets areas that do not earn a lot will be left to erode this is good because they will make money and protect valuable land.
