Administered Boundary
When a boundary separates natural resources that may be used by both countries
Allocational Boundary Dispute (Resource Dispute)
Sovereignty for up to 24 nautical miles off your coast
Contiguous Zone
Established by a legal document that divides on entity from another
Defined Boundary
Drawn on a map by a cartographer to show the limits of space
Delimited Boundary
Identified by physical objects on the landscape
Ex. Signs, fences, walls
Demarcated Boundary
Two or more parties disagree on how to interpret legal documents that identify the boundary
Definitional Boundary
Coastal states can explore and manage natural resources up to 200 nautical miles out
Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
Water beyond any countries EEZ that if open to all states
High Seas
A country seeks to annex territory where it has cultural ties to part of its people or history
Irredentism
Centers on where a boundary should be, and how it is delimited or demarcated
Locational Boundary Disputes (Territorial Disputes)
Centers not on where a boundary is, but how it functions
Operational Boundary Dispute (Functional Dispute)
States or territories that are completely surrounded by the territory of another state
Political Enclave
Political Boundaries not following cultural or economic landscapes
Shatterbelt
EEZ’s are very valuable to these, and often larger than the actual landmasses
Small Island Developing State (SIDS)
