Q

What is an experiment that investigates the effects of temperature on rate?

A

The effect of temperature on rate can be demonstrated by reacting magnesium with hydrochloric acid:
Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) –> MgCl2(aq) + H2(g)
In this reaction, the magnesium disappears. Variables:
- Independent: the temperature of the HCl (aq)
- Dependant: the time taken for Mg (s) to disappear
- Control: mass and surface area of Mg (s) and volume and concentration of HCl (aq)
Rate is then calculated from the times taken - rate = 1/time (s)

Q

What does the graph of temperature against rate look like?

A

It is not a straight line and therefore rate is not proportional to temperature. It does not go through the origin because rate isn’t zero at 0 degrees.
