3.4.7 Making insoluble salts Flashcards
1
Q
What is a precipitate?
A
A precipitate is an insoluble solid that forms in a solution.
2
Q
What are the spectator ions in a precipitation reaction?
A
The ions formed that are not involved in making the precipitate.
3
Q
How to make insoluble salt crystals by precipitation?
A
- Mix the two solutions together. Each solution should contain one of the ions needed to make the precipitate.
- The salt precipitate will sink to the bottom.
- Filter out the salt precipitate. The residue is the salt we want to keep. the filtrate is the leftover solution.
- Rinse the salt with water. It doesn’t dissolve because it is insoluble.
- Dry the salt by dabbing it with a paper towel.
