3.3.4 Ionic Properties Flashcards
Ionic compounds have … melting points
…high…
Why do ionic compounds have high melting points?
Ionic compounds have a giant ionic lattice structure with lots of very strong ionic bonds. To break these bonds, a large amount of energy is needed, thus it has a high melting point.
Why do some ionic compounds have higher melting points than others?
Some ionic compounds have higher melting points than others because the ions have higher charges. This makes the attraction between the ions even stronger and harder to break.
Electrical conductivity requires what two things?
- Charged particles
- that are free to move
Can a solid ionic compound conduct electricty?
No because although there are charged particles, these particles are not free to move.
Can a liquid or aqueous ionic compound conduct electricity?
Yes because there are charged particles that can move freely.
