4.2.1X Global networks and flows: Trafficked people Flashcards
Definition
Illegal movement of people, typically for the purpose of forced labour, sexual exploitation, or forced marriages
Problem
UN: 27,000 victims of trafficking between 2010 and 2012.
Human trafficking thrives in regions characterised by significant social and economic disparities that make individuals vulnerable to exploitation (E.g. poverty, lack of education, limited job opportunities)
Common areas of origin of victims: south and east Asia (Nepal, Myanmar, China) and Sub-Saharan Africa
Flows
Victims are often transported to economically prosperous regions like North America, Europe, and the Middle East.
The Middle East has the highest number of incoming trafficking victims, with approximately 200,000 individuals, primarily from South Asia.
The general pattern of human trafficking is from low-income countries (LICs) to high-income countries (HICs).
Result
Forced labour of migrant workers is prevalent in oil-rich states such as Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
These nations have rapid economic growth and a significant labour demand that local populations cannot meet at a low cost.
