1.1.3X Uneven population distribution (China) Flashcards
Population distribution in China
(1.1.3X)
Concentrated in the eastern part of the country, especially in coastal areas and the lower reaches of river valleys
Much of the rest of the country is characterised by desert (e.g. Gobi Desert), Himalayas and dry grasslands
Reason for uneven population distribution in China
(1.1.3X)
Primarily due to the country’s physical geography
Only a small proportion of the country can provide for rain-fed agriculture
A lot of land is too dry or steep for much agriculture
Coastal and river locations are more favoured sites for trade and commerce
Western provinces remain less developed than eastern
Internal migration in China
(1.1.3X)
160 million migrants left rural areas to seek work in urban areas
Wages in urban areas are 40% higher than rural
Mostly moved to urban industrial cities by the coast
Result of internal migration in China
(1.1.3X)
Good for the Chinese economy, beneficial to migrants but at a personal and environmental cost
Land labour costs are rising, Chinese government tried to guide the recent industrial growth and the movement of internal migrants to non-coastal areas
