4.1.6 - global trends Flashcards
Globalisation
The process whereby boundaries between countries are reduced or eliminated, allowing individuals, groups, + companies to act on a global scale.
Climate change
Burning of fossil fuels to provide energy has resulted in an increase in the production of CO2 + other greenhouse gases (trap heat radiated from the sun).
- Rising sea levels
- Changing weather patterns
- More extreme weather events
Rising sea levels
Due to expansion of water as it warms + increase volume as ice melts.
- Relocation of communities (coastal areas)
- Reduced availability of fresh water
- Reduced availability of food
- Increased infectious disease
Changing weather patterns
- Extreme heat conditions (mosquitos thrive, pollen levels increase, some crops can’t grow, etc).
- Changing weather patterns (floods = less safe water, etc).
More extreme weather events
Homelessness (low + mid IC’s have less resources to rebuild).
Conflict
- Physical environments + infrastructure are destroyed.
- Living in fear
- Main income earner may day
- Grief
Mass migration
- Crowded + unsanitary living conditions
- Children dropping out of school to work
- Lack of food
- Displacement from home communities.
World trade - positives
Provides job opportunities
World trade - negatives
- Child labour + unsafe working conditions
- Crowded facilities (increase communicable disease).
- Children + women can lose sense of hope + purpose.
Tourism - positives
- Job creation
- Sense of pride being able to share home + culture.
- Promoting cultural diversity + building sense of belonging.
Tourism - negatives
- Spread of communicable disease between countries
- Inadequate disposal of excess waste = water-borne diseases.
Digital technologies
- eHealth increases efficiency + helps those with chronic diseases to still function.
- Disaster preparedness
- Less communicable diseases as mobile phones can be used for contact-sharing (stop the spread)
- Can connect people to resources.
- Privacy can be hacked.
