4.1.3 The Liver Flashcards
What is the Liver?
A Large gland
In which Quadrant is the Liver situated?
The Upper Right Quadrant
In life, how is the liver described?
A Reddish / Brown colour, soft in consistency and very friable
What are the 2 lobes visible on the Anterior Surface of the Liver?
- The Right Lobe
2. The Left Lobe
What Separates the 2 Lobes visible on the Anterior Surface of the Liver?
The Falciform Ligament
What is connected to the Falciform Ligament?
The Liagmentum Teres (Round Ligament)
What is the Ligamentum Teres an Embryological Remnant of?
The Foetal Umbilical Vein
What connects the Superior aspect of the Right lobe of the Liver to the Diaphragm?
The Coronary Ligament
What connects the Superior aspect of the Left lobe of the Liver to the Diaphragm?
The Left Triangular Ligament
What additional 2 lobes of the Liver are Visible from the Posterior view of the Liver?
- The Caudate Lobe
2. The Quadrate Lobe
Which Posterior area of the Liver is in Direct Contact with the Diaphragm?
The Bare Area of the Liver
Is the Bare are of the Liver covered by Peritoneum?
No
From a Posterior View, where can the Right Triangular Ligament be seen?
At the Superior Right border of the Liver, Just inferior to the Bare area of the Liver
What is the name of the collection of vessels, visible from a posterior view of the Liver?
The Porta Hepatis
What Vessels make up the Porta Hepatis?
- The Hepatic Portal Vein
- The Hepatic Artery
- The Hepatic Duct
Others: - The Hepatic Nerve Plexus
- The Lymphatic Vessels
What fold of the Peritoneum is wrapped around the Porta Hepatis?
The Lesser Omentum
Which Major Vein is closely related to the Liver?
The Inferior Vena Cava
Where is the Caudate Lobe of the Liver situated?
At the Posterosuperior Surface of the Liver, adjacent to the Inferior Vena Cava
Where is the Quadrate Lobe of the Liver situated?
At the Posteroinferior Surface of the Liver, Inferior to the Porta Hepatis
What lies immediately posterior to the Quadrate lobe of the Liver?
The Gall Bladder
What is the Colic Area of the Liver?
The Posterolateral Surface of the Liver where there is an indentation from the Hepatic Flexure of the Colon
What is the Gastric Area of the Liver?
The Posteromedial Surface of the Liver there there is an indentation from the Stomach
Do the Hepatic Veins pass through the Porta Hepatis?
No
How are the Liver arranged Histologically?
There are Hexagon of Branches of the Porta Hepatis (containing a Hepatic Duct, Hepatic Artery and Hepatic Potal Vein) surrounding a Central Vein
How does the Blood Flow through the Hepatocytes?
The Blood flows from the Hepatic Portal Vein, and Hepatic Artery, through the Hepatocytes where it is processed. This will then be deposited in the Central Vein
How does the Bile flow?
The Bile flows from Hepatocytes towards the Hepatic Duct (away from the Central Vein)
What do the Central Veins fuse to form?
The Hepatic Veins
Where do the Hepatic Veins drain into?
The Inferior Vena Cave
