4.1 DNA Flashcards
How is DNA stored in prokaryotes?
Short, circular, non-linear and not associated with proteins
How is DNA stored in eukaryotes?
Linear, long and associated with proteins
What composes a chromosome?
DNA coiled around its associated histone proteins
Why do prokaryotes supercoil their DNA?
To condense it to fit in the cell
Which organelles can contain DNA?
Chloroplasts, mitochondria
- Found like prokaryotic DNA
What does a gene code for?
- A functional RNA (tRNA, mRNA, rRNA)
- The amino sequence of a polypeptide
Why is the genetic code non-overlapping?
Every base triplet is read in sequence separately
- Read only once
Why is the genetic code universal?
Same specific base triplets code for same amino acids in all living organisms
Why is the genetic code degenerate?
More combinations of specific base triplets than amino acids
Some amino acids coded for by multiple base triplets
