41 Different contexts, different levels Flashcards
Describe GENERAL ENGLISH
When most students learn English for no special reason. (Many schools and language institutes).
English for SPECIFIC PURPOSES (ESP)
When students have a special reason to learn English (related to a profession or career).
BUSINESS ENGLISH
English is taught in companies or schools where students are learning business English.
English for ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP)
Is studied by many people who need to use English at college or university.
(CLIL) Content and Language Integrated Learning
CLIL is the use of the English language with learning school-curriculum subjects. Students work with a subject and the language to describe that subject, both at the same time.
Describe the Plateau effect and what teachers should do about it
It happens when students reach the intermediate level and feel that are not making progress. Teachers should provide clear goals for them to aim at and explain why they are learning and what progress they are making.
Compare face-to-face learning with virtual learning.
In virtual learning, students are not physically present as in face-to-face classes.
Compare large classes with one-to-one classes
In one-to-one classes (1-30), the teacher can find out exactly what the student needs or wants, and be well-prepared but also be flexible as the lesson progresses.
In large classes (30, 60, 100+), it is important to give clear instructions and make it clear when we are moving from one stage to another, maximizing the amount of pairwork or group work.
Describe Needs analysis
Analysis to find out exactly what our students are learning English. It is better to do a needs analysis before teaching ESP and Business English.
