35 How people learn languages Flashcards
Acquisition learning hypothesis
Language acquisition is made more natural and effective by i-1 (The teacher provides a level higher than the student’s current language level).
Monitor hypothesis
Constantly checking for rules or mistakes, which delays fluency.
Natural order hypothesis
All learners acquire a language in roughly the same order.
INPUT hypothesis
The new language should be within the learner’s capacity to acquire and learn it. Give the students +1 level
Affective filter hypothesis
Anxiety is an impediment as it shuts down acquisition. Students must be comfortable and relax while learning.
Language acquisition vs Learning
Language acquisition is through exposure (listening and having opportunities to use the language) and is subconscious. Whereas Learning is a conscious process, taught through grammar, vocabulary, and functions.
