36 How people learn: 4 methods Flashcards
Grammar translation
A method that is sentence-based and where students compare and translate the target language into their own language and vice-versa.
Audio-Lingual methodology
It is a method that gives the students a lot of speaking practice by using habit-formation drills. A-L methodology uses stimulus-response-reinforcement (the teacher prises students). It is not organized around grammar and vocabulary.
The communicative approach
Focuses on the idea that people get the language if they have opportunities to use it. Focuses more on the content than the form (how successfully students can communicate).
Task-based learning
Students do larger tasks, given chances to use the language in the classroom. Their success is judged on how well they achieve their objectives using the language.
Behaviourism
A phycological theory that suggests learning is based on habit formation (through our responses to certain stimuli).
Scaffolding
The support and guidence that teachers can give to students to help them learn.
Eclecticism
When teachers use techniques from different approaches and methods
Comprehensible input
Spoken or written language which students can understand even if is above their own language production level.
