define a base with example
A base neutralises an acid to form a salt.
e.g. metal oxides, metal hydroxides, metal carbonates and ammonia.
define alkali
An alkali is a water soluble base.
When dissolved in water, alkalis release hydroxide (OH-) ions.
acid + metal oxide=
salt + water
acid + alkali=
salt + water
acid + metal hydroxide
salt + water
acid + metal carbonate
salt+water+carbon dioxide
define strong acid and which ones are strong
releases H+ ions into solution and fully dissociates in aq solution eg. hcl
define weak acid
only release a proportion of its available hydrogen atoms into solution as H+ ions. It partially dissociates in aq solution
define neutralisation
acid reacts with a base
to produce a salt AND water.
what are the 4 bases we need to know
metal,oxide-hydroxide-carbonate and ammonia
what is a neutralisation reaction?
the reaction between an acid and base to produce a salt and water
