4.1-4.11 Waves Flashcards
What do waves transfer?
Energy and information
What do waves not transfer?
Matter
Does the sound or the wave travel in sound waves?
The wave
What is the amplitude of a wave?
Distance from equilibrium line to the maximum displacement (Crest or Trough)
Give the definition for period of a wave
.The time taken for a whole wave to completely pass a certain point
Give the definition for wavefront of a wave
.The plane in which the wave travels
Give three differences of longitudinal and transverse waves
1.Transverse light waves. S waves.
Longitudinal waves =P waves
2.Transverse=Has peaks and troughs
Longitudinal=Has compressions and refractions
3.Transverse=Vibrations are at right angles to the direction at travel
Longitudinal=Vibrations are in same direction as the direction of travel
How would you go about measuring the velocity of sound in the air?
.Make a noise at 50 metres from a solid wall and measure the time it takes to hear an echo
.Have two microphones connected to a data logger at a large distance apart and record time difference from sound passing from one to another
How would you go about measuring the ripples on a water surface?
.Use a stroboscope which has the same frequency as the water waves then measure the distance between fixed ripples
.Move a pencil along the paper at the same speed as wavefront and measure time taken to draw the line and length of line and then use speed=dstance/time
Do waves reflect of a flat or curved surface?
.Flat
For the reflected wave to be stronger should the object be smoother or rougher?
.Smoother the surface the stronger the reflected wave is
Give two effects of refraction
.Speed decreases
.Wavelength decreases
.Light bends closer to the normal
What type of material will waves pass through?
Transparent material
What’s the process called of waves passing through a material and still emerging?
Transmission
Once waves have been absorbed what will they be slowly reemitted as?
Heat
