11.1-11.10-Static electricity Flashcards
How can an insulator be charged?
Through friction
How can an insulator be charged through friction?
Through the transfer of electrons
What is the charge of the material gaining electrons?
Negative
What is the charge of the material that loses electrons?
Positive
What happens to electrons when you get a shock from an object?
Electrons jump from one object to another
What happens to electrons in lightning?
.The charge jumps from a highly negative object to a highly positive object
.Lightning occurs when the charge difference becomes so great a massive spark jumps across to balance the charge
How does Earthing remove excess charge by movement of electrons?
.Allows electrons to flow into the Earth removing excess charge
.This allows materials to stay neutral
How do insecticide sprayers use electrostatic forces?
.The spray droplets are given a charge and repel each other allowing the droplets to spread evenly
What are the dangers of sparking in everyday life (Like fuelling cars)?
.If a charge builds up and a spark forms it could ignite and cause a massive explosion
.As fuel passes through the hose to the vehicle a charge can build up
.When it is too large a spark may form
.A resulting spark may ignite the fuel
.The hoses are earthed to stop this from happening
What is an electric field?
A region where an electric charge experiences a force
In what direction do electric field diagrams point in?
In a direction a positive charge would go
How does an electric field help explain static electricity?
.A charged object creates an electric field around itself so they can interact with charge particles
