  • Virus from family Parvoviridae belonging to Protoparvovirus
  • DNA virus
  • Parvo = small
  • Non-enveloped and very resistant!

A

2 forms of disease: enteric and cardiac forms.
Cardiac = very rare

A

Horizontal transmission
- Direct contact with infected animal, vomit or feces or by fomites

What are clinical signs of canine parvovirus?

A
  • Enteric form: More common type, destruction of intestinal mucosa, hemorrhages, fever, lethargic, blood diarrhea, vomiting.
  • Might die from dehydration, hemorrhage and anemia.
  • Cardiac form: Tachycardia, dyspnea

Animal may die.

  • SNAP test, ELISa: Feces as sample for detection of Ag
  • Complete blood count: Leukopenia, anemia

A

No treatment!

Only supportive, antiemitics, ATB for secondary infection, fluid and nutrition

A
  • Vaccination.
  • Important to be careful with puppy until fully vaccinated especially in countries where parvovirus occurs (Not in Sweden)
  • General hygienic measures
