4: Inflammation II Flashcards
What are four events which can occur after acute inflammation?
Resolution
Suppuration
Repair, organisation and fibrosis
Chronic inflammation
What is resolution?
Complete restoration of tissue to normal
What is suppuration?
Pus formation
What is a hollow space containing pus?
Abscess
What is an empyema?
Walled-off area filled with pus
What process occurs if the injury produces a lot of debris which isn’t easily cleared?
Organisation
Which mucosal injuries favour resolution?
Abrasions / erosions where basal lamina isn’t breached
Which mucosal injuries favour organisation and fibrosis?
Ulcers etc.
Where mucosal injury is severe, i.e basal lamina is breached
What forms at the site of mucosal injury?
Granulation tissue
What infilitrates granulation tissue at the beginning of organisation?
Capillaries
Myofibroblasts
What is laid down by myofibroblasts during granulation tissue formation?
Collagen
Smooth muscle cells
What occurs if injury is really severe?
Scarring and fibrosis
Fibrotic tissue is (ill-suited / well suited) to its function.
ill-suited
What occurs when the liver’s regenerative potential is overwhelmed by injury?
Scarring and fibrosis
i.e CIRRHOSIS
Which types of injury favour chronic inflammation?
Suppuration
Persistent injuries
Persistent infections
Autoimmune disease
