4 Hand and wrist Flashcards
How many carpal bones are there?
8.
Name the carpal bones form lateral to medial.
Scaphoid, Lunate, Triquetrum, Pisiform.
Trapezium, Trapezoid, Capitate, Hamate.
Which nerves supply the anterior flexors of the wrist?
Median and ulnar nerves.
Which nerve supplies the posterior extensors of the wrist?
Radial nerve.
Which structures pass through the carpal tunnel?
Tendons of: flexor digitorum superficialis, flexor digitorum profundus, flexor pollicis longus.
Median nerve.
What are the muscles of the hand supplied by?
Ulnar nerve.
Except: thenar muscles and 1st + 2nd lumbricals which are supplied by the median nerve.
Where does the flexor retinaculum attach?
Pisiform and hook of hamate.
Scaphoid tuberosity and trapezium.
What are the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome?
Pins and needles in lateral 3.5 palmar digits and.
Thenar muscle weakness and atrophy.
Inability to oppose the thumb.
How might the median nerve be damaged?
Lunate dislocation following fall on an outstretched hand.
What does the median nerve supply in the hand?
Supplies thenar muscles. 1st and 2nd lumbricals. Palmer - lateral 3.5 digits. Dorsal - distal half of lateral 3.5 digits. Lumbricals.
What does the ulnar nerve supply in the hand?
Medial side of palm.
Lateral 1.5 digits.
Palmaris brevis.
Hypothenar muscles, adductor pollicis, interossei and 4th + 5th lumbricals.
What are the contents of Guyon’s canal?
Ulnar nerve and artery.
What is handlebar neuropathy?
Ulnar nerve compression at wrist.
Sensory loss to lateral 1.5 digits. Weakness of most of intrinsic muscles of hand. Permanent extension of metacarpophalangeal joints of digits 4 + 5.
What does scaphoid wrist fracture result in?
Who gets it?
Tenderness in the anatomical snuffbox.
May result in avascular necrosis of scaphoid, as blood enters distally.
Young.
What is Colle’s fracture?
Who gets it?
Fracture of distal radius. Styloid process sometimes avulsed.
Older ladies.
